Orofacial myofunctional therapy, sometimes referred to as myology,
is basically physical therapy of the tongue and orofacial muscles involved in speech, swallowing, and breathing. The goal is to create or re-establish proper function of the oral cavity via a patient specific, non-invasive therapy program. It starts by assessing existing oral dysfunction (OMD) and root causes. A therapy program of stretches, neuromuscular training, and habit awareness and alteration then helps patients gain proper lip seal, nasal breathing, swallow, and tongue posture. When these goals are reached a long list of acute and chronic conditions are improved and quality of life heightened.

OMT can benefit anyone with oral dysfunction.
In children, the therapy works closely with natural growth and supports development of structure, function, and habits. This can prevent dysfunction or reverse it before permanent limitations develop.
In adults, therapy works to reverse dysfunction by addressing root causes and harmful compensations plus creates new neuromuscular connections, and brings habit awareness into passive life choices.

My name is Dee. I'm an orofacial myofunctional therapist and registered dental hygienist with over 20 years of oral systemic health experience. My clinical dental hygiene career has always been in family practice where I've had the pleasure of working with patients of all ages. I have always emphasized continued education and exceeded required license requirements. Continued learning is what inspires me and pushes me to be the best professional I can be. After completing extensive courses in orofacial myofunctional therapy and attending conferences prioritizing airway and other oral systemic conditions, I opened my private myofunctional practice, guided by my license's scope of practice. And now, just like in my dental hygiene world, I provide therapy to patients young and old, only it is myofunctional therapy.
At M.I. Myo I see patients from 6 years of age and up.
It usually starts with a free phone consultation to see if you will benefit from therapy. If so, we schedule a comprehensive assessment. Based on the findings, a therapy program is designed to meet your specific needs. Usually, a therapy program includes 10 - 16 therapy sessions plus easy home exercises that will take around 5 -10 minutes per day.
I'm pleased to be able to offer my services in person at my practice in Mercer Island, come to you anywhere in the Puget Sound area, or even provide the therapy via telehealth.
Because of the complex nature of oral dysfunction, I work closely with other professionals such as airway dentists, orthodontists, ENTs, allergists and more.
In order to create an optimal therapy plan, my services involve getting to the root cause of your dysfunction. This makes it possible to tailor my therapy plus often introduces an interdisciplinary therapy approach. My ultimate goal is to provide you with the most comprehensive information and treatment options.

My therapy becomes a strong oral-systemic package so that you can...
